TrustAfrica Condems Murder of Human Rights Defender and Lawyer Thulani Ruddolf Maseko: Calls for Justice

TrustAfrica strongly condemns the horrific and unconscionable assassination of Eswatini Human Rights Lawyer Thulani Ruddolf Maseko who was gunned down in front of his wife and kids in his living room on Saturday, January 21, 2023. Advocate Thulani Ruddolf Maseko was a committed human rights activist, who worked tirelessly for the advancement of democracy and the rule of law in Eswatini, his country of origin, and contributed to human rights efforts and solidarity within the Southern Africa region and beyond.

The murder of Thulani Ruddolf Maseko constitutes an attack on the fundamental values of free speech and democratic freedom. It is imperative that the perpetrators of this assassination be brought to justice. The same goes for other serious crimes committed recently in Eswatini, especially on activists who have merely asked that the rule of law be respected.

As a leading pan-african organisation, TrustAfrica is extremely concerned about the worsening climate of human rights violations in Eswatini and call upon national authorities to immediately put to a stop the crackdown against democracy activists.  Furthermore, we call upon leaders in SADC and the African Union and the wider international community to hold the Eswatini authorities to account for the murder of Thulani Maseko and many other democracy activists for democracy in Eswatini.

TrustAfrica offers its condolences to the loved ones of the deceased as well as to the Pan-African activists' community and shares in their pain in these difficult times.
