TrustAfrica and Solidaridad, in partnership with Malawi’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, will next week, hold a one-day workshop that aims to highlight the key issues affecting the tea sector in Africa. 

The workshop will bring together over 100 stakeholders from across the region, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, DRC Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.  

Themed: Fostering Genuine and Inclusive Sustainability in the Tea Value Chain, the Multisector tea forum is aimed at coming up with key solutions to the challenges affecting the tea sector in the region.  

The workshop will be held in Malawi on 27 October 2022.

The 2nd African Social Movements Baraza has so far been an enlightening gathering of like-minded progressive social movement actors, who traveled from various parts of the continent to be part of this moment.

During a vibrant morning registration process, comrades enjoyed reconnecting with each other in-person, which for many was the first time since the resumption of international travel. The facilitator for the convening is Nizenande Machi, a seasoned conversation guider who has kept the flames of inspiration alive for the participants.

Global Forum on Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent (GFoD) is the global advocacy mechanism of Communities Discriminated on Work and Descent (CDWD). More than 260 million people across the world are discriminated on the basis of work and descent and are more commonly known as Dalits, Roma-Sinti, Quilombola, Burakumin, Oru, amongst many other names. Discrimination on Work and Decent (DWD) is a global phenomenon which lacks public recognition and acknowledgement and affected communities are among the most marginalised and excluded people.

After a two-days workshop at Le Niambour Hotel, Dakar, TrustAfrica and WINGS, in partnership with African Philanthropy Forum (APF), the African Philanthropy Network (APN), Center for African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) at Wits Business School, Global Fund for Community Foundation (GFCF), and African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA), have resolved to strengthen the philanthropy support ecosystem in West Africa. 

 After ten years of hosting the Pan-African Conference (PAC) on Illicit Financial Flows and Taxation, this year, Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) is excited to co-host its 10th PAC alongside the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF). Over the years, TJNA and ATAF have advocated for pro-poor tax policies and systems that curb leakages and optimise domestic resource mobilisation on the continent. The uncertainty of the current global economy has made this mission more critical than ever. As such, in light of the present context, the 2022 PAC will be held under the theme ‘Tax Justice Amid Multiple Crises.’ And in the spirit and tradition of the PAC, the two lead institutions will collaborate with other organisations to deliver a successful 10th PAC.

The main objective of this year’s PAC conference is, therefore, to explore ways to mitigate the impact of global external shocks on the continent through tackling illicit financial flows and undertaking progressive domestic resource mobilisation.

TrustAfrica, in partnership with Solidaridad, will convene a regional multistakeholder platform on October 27th 2022 in Blantyre, Malawi, to deliberate on inclusive policies that will help to promote sustainability in the tea value chain in Africa.

The Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC), based at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), TrustAfrica and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), are jointly organizing a continental symposium on the theme: “The African Union at 20: Progress, Problems and Prospects”.

The symposium will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria, South Africa on 2-4 November 2022. The symposium is part and parcel of the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the African Union (AU). The AU was officially founded and launched on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa. The Union took over the mantle for the pursuit of continental unity and integration from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which had existed since 1963. Both the OAU and AU are key institutional architectures and historical landmarks for the advancement of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance, especially from the perspective of state-driven continental integration. 

On Tuesday, 20 September 2022, TrustAfrica organized a dialogue on the issue of deforestation and youth labour. The purpose of the workshop, which was held in Ivory Coast, was to draw attention to the dangers of deforestation and child labour in Africa. The workshop also aimed to improve participants’ knowledge of the new Forestry Law under Article 27 on Ownership of Forest Resources, including trees. About 20 farmers in the cocoa and oil palm sector participated in the Workshop.
