Meet Omotade Akin Aina - affectionately known to his colleagues as “Tade”.  Tade just finished his final term as a Trustee of the TrustAfrica Board during our last Board meeting in May. We only thought it appropriate to share his illustrious track record with you as we the bid farewell to Tade in his official capacity as Board Trustee and welcome him into the TrustAfrica Diaspora family! It has been a delight and honor to have you walk alongside us for the past 9 years and look forward to continued collaboration as we work together to shape the future we want for Africa. Godspeed Tade! We’ll see you at family reunions! 

COVID-19 has not disappeared, and in Africa the third wave is wreaking havoc on the most vulnerable communities. The health and economic impact of COVID-19 has plunged millions of Africans deeper into poverty. On the 1st of July 2021, the Africa CDC director said "The African continent has had 5.5 million confirmed COVID-19 infections and has seen a “remarkable” 23% increase in deaths over the past week." Community Immunity is a collaborative initiative between African Philanthropy Network (APN), Southern Africa Trust (SAT) TrustAfrica to provide quick impact support to bring immediate relief to people living at the margins of society while supporting policy initiatives to provide long term solutions. For over 10 years now, TrustAfrica has joined with philanthropic partners who espouse the meaning of solidarity in setting up and running Zimbabwe Alliance as a collaborative funder-civil society framework supporting work towards democratization in Zimbabwe. Schooner Foundation was inspirational in the naming of the initiative and Wallace Global Fund has proven a steadfast partner in exploring the opportunities for advancing democratic participation and contributing to a vibrant civic space in Zimbabwe. Other partners such as IDEX now known as Thousand Currents, American Jewish World Service, and many others have joined at different stages, but these two have demonstrated what we call a solidarity partnership. In 2011, ZimAlliance supported technical expertise to support the landmark Constitution making process in Zimbabwe, which eventually gained support through a national referendum in 2013. Since then, ZimAlliance has supported electoral monitoring processes using the Africa-based Ushaidi platform developed in Kenya; seed funded several of the most prominent civic organizations operating in Zimbabwe today; and developed an emergency response fund to support human rights defenders at risk in Zimbabwe.  

Le procès et la condamnation en 2015-2016 de l’ancien président du Tchad, M. Hisséne Habré ont été salués comme une étape importante pour la justice en Afrique. Survenant à un moment où l’Afrique entretenait des relations conflictuelles avec la Cour Pénale Internationale, la décision de l’Union Africaine (UA) d’établir une juridiction pénale hybride pour juger un ancien chef d’Etat a été un exemple historique de leadership dans la promotion de la responsabilité des crimes internationaux au niveau régional. Elle démontre, la volonté de l’organisation régionale de lutter contre l’impunité des crimes internationaux en Afrique.

Le travail en collaboration est au cœur de nos approches à TrustAfrica. D'après notre expérience, la collaboration signifie gérer un ensemble complexe de relations avec des groupes partageant les mêmes idées et travaillant ensemble pour atteindre des objectifs communs. Souvent, cela nous a amené à travailler dans le cadre de consortiums, réseaux, groupes d'apprentissage, communautés de pratique, alliances stratégiques, partenariats et coalitions. Pour nous, les collaborations ont permis l'innovation et ont servi de moyen d'accroître l'impact collectif en s'attaquant à certains des défis de développement les plus complexes du continent.

In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit countries across the world, we witnessed the withdrawal of International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) from Africa, removing expatriate staff and closing down offices, including a restriction of funding if it was not directly related to health services or in some way directed to Covid-19 responses. This meant that local actors and organizations like TrustAfrica had to step in and fill the gap left by INGOs and other bilateral aid institutions, raising local resources and mobilizing efforts, and in many cases increasing the profile of regional champions and philanthropists.  

Our dear colleague and friend, Sibongile Mkhabela, a member of our Board of Directors, has been honored with Chevalier de l'ordre de merite (National Order of Merit for outstanding contributions to social development), a very high distinction awarded by the Republic of France. TrustAfrica, celebrates this great achievement and has prepared a message to celebrate the accomplishment.

This is a well-deserved recognition of Bongi’s exemplary performance in the transformation and development of post-apartheid South Africa. As you know, she led the building of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, both of which she co-founded and headed as Chief Executive Officer for many years. From April 2020, she began establishing a new corporate initiated but independent foundation, The Barloworld Empowerment Development Foundation.

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed, at a global level, the abnormalcy of prevailing social, economic and political systems – particularly their failure to protect the most vulnerable. At TrustAfrica, we are clear that there is no going back to the old normal. Accordingly, our current focus is on building forward better. We need new models across our economic, social and political systems that will protect the most marginalized and work for everyone. Earlier this month we concluded our strategic retreat, where we reaffirmed the theme of our strategic plan for the period 2020-2024 as Shaping the Future we Want for Africa!

TrustAfrica, en collaboration avec EM2030, a organisé conjointement une formation virtuelle sur le plaidoyer axé sur des données, les 3, 4 et 5 mai 2021. De nombreuses organisations de défense des droits de la femme sont confrontées à des lacunes en termes de ressources et de capacités qui les empêchent de faire leur travail efficacement. La manière de collecter et d’utiliser efficacement les données et les preuves est l’un des problèmes urgents auxquels elles sont confrontées dans le renforcement de leur plaidoyer. Au cours de la formation de trois jours, 18 défenseurs ont vu leurs compétences en matière de défense des droits de la femme se renforcer eu égard aux éléments fondamentaux de la recherche, de l’analyse et de l’évaluation des données. Ils ont maintenant une compréhension plus claire de la façon d’utiliser les données dans leur travail de sensibilisation. Ce fut un bon moment d’apprentissage qui a revigoré les femmes leaders, notamment dans le mouvement social. Étant donné que le plaidoyer doit être axé sur des données, il était important que nos femmes leaders apprennent à répondre aux exigences de données sur la VBG avant de pouvoir les collecter, les analyser et les communiquer. Ces trois jours ont également été l’occasion pour les femmes leaders de différents pays et de divers contextes d’apprendre les uns des autres.

TrustAfrica organise un webinaire le 29 Mai sur le thème : « Amadou Mahtar Mbow et l’émancipation des peuples en Afrique et dans le monde ».

A l’instar de la communauté scientifique et panafricaniste, TrustAfrica continue de célébrer le Centenaire du Professeur Amadou Mahtar Mbow, avec une série de wébinaires qui ont commencé depuis le 27 mars 2021, date de son anniversaire. Notre Directeur exécutif, Dr Ebrima Sall, Dr Jean-Bernard Ouedraogo, le journaliste Barka Ba et Vincent Foucher animeront le 29 Mai 2021 une table ronde sur le thème : « Amadou Mahtar Mbow et l’émancipation des peuples en Afrique et dans le monde ».
