Developing a Collective Framework and Agenda to Advance Social Justice Philanthropy


TrustAfrica, The Working Group on Philanthropy for Social Justice and Peace (PSJP) and the African Grantmakers Network, in collaboration with the Global Fund for Community Foundations and the Arab Foundations Forum are pleased to share with you the report of a convening on Developing a Collective Framework and Agenda to Advance Social Justice Philanthropy in Africa and
the Arab Region.  The report is a result of a 2-day convening in October, 2012 before the start of the African Grantmakers' Forum in Johannesburg, South Africa.  You can find the report here.

Despite great strides in advancement, Africa is facing problems – especially around the fair distribution of natural resources – that need to be dealt with swiftly.

Africa exudes a certain optimism about its future these days. ‘Africa is rising’ is today’s cliche, coined by the same Economist magazine that once declared Africa ‘dark’. But this goes beyond that magazine’s take on matters – you have to be here to experience the excitement. Leading economists on the continent and beyond are throwing around all sorts of positive projections – some as far as 2060. A number of factors, they say, will lead to Africa becoming a lot wealthier by 2050.

Report on the 2nd Consultative Dialogue between Civil Society Organizations and the Pan African Parliament

Introduction

The 2nd dialogue between civil society organizations and the Pan African Parliament (PAP) brought together civil society leaders from across Africa to engage with members of PAP on issues related to state and citizens’ relations. Under the theme, "African Integration, Transformation & Citizen Engagement," the focus of the meeting was African citizens' role in political and economic transformation on the continent.

If there was any doubt about the philanthropic intentions of wealthy Africans – think again, writes Belinda Otas in the BBC Focus on Africa magazine 
 
In Africa, the act of selfless giving for the betterment of the community – a form of ubuntu – is hardly new. The entrepreneurial spirit has long been alive and well too. Now it seems that as business has boomed in sectors from mining and cement to sugar and telecommunications, these two things have collided to create a large number of high-net wealth individuals who appear to have a deep desire to give back.
